Santa may not be the only person visiting you over the holidays. For many people, this time of year means putting up – or putting up with – family who come into town for a while. No matter how exciting or exhausting the prospect of hosting your out-of-town guests may be, here are a few tips on how to make a holiday visit from your family a little more merry and bright.
Do a project together. If you haven’t seen your family lately, you may initially be spending a lot of time catching up and swapping memories. But sooner or later, you’ll need to find a few ways to entertain your loved ones. Some people choose to wait until their out-of-town guests arrive to decorate the tree. Others may stock up on board games. Still other folks may have a gingerbread house blueprint ready to go. Regardless of what it is, be sure to have on hand some fun projects that your whole family can do together.
Get them out of the house. The holidays often bring bad weather to many parts of the country, but it’s a big mistake to keep your family indoors during their entire visit. Everyone goes a little stir crazy after a few days cooped up inside, so be sure to have one or two outdoor escapes ready for your loved ones. Even a dinner out or trip to the movies can help to break up the monotony of staying inside for multiple days in a row.
Let them relax. Though you want to keep your out-of-towners entertained during their stay, that doesn’t mean you have to create a planned itinerary for each day. The holidays are the one season when it’s okay to just kick back, relax, and not feel guilty about it. To make sure that you loved ones get the downtime they deserve, stock up on some holiday movies and snacks, and let the holiday vegging commence.
